Opposition to Simon Commission

England i.e. the United Kingdom had established the Simon Commission in 1928, which was being headed by Sir John Simon. This Simon Commission was formed keeping in view the Indian Political Situation. And its aim was to reform the constitution of India.

The biggest mistake in this was that not a single Indian was included in this commission formed for the constitution of India. Because of which the Simon Commission had to face opposition from all over India. On December 30, 1928, when the head of the Simon Commission, Sir John Simon, was on a visit to Lahore, Lajpat Rai took out a non-violent march against John Simon and he also gave the slogan “Simon Go Back”. They showed black flags to John Simon.

And because of this work of Lala Lajpat Rai, the then Superintendent of Police of Lahore, James Scott got lathi-charged on the entire crowd of Puri. In which many protestors became casualties and Lala Lajpat Rai also became casualties with many injuries. And he later addressed the entire crowd of Puri saying, “Every attack on me will be the last nail in the coffin of the British Empire”.

Lala Lajpat Rai passed away

Lala Lajpat Rai could not fully recover from the lathi charge by James Scott and died on 17 November 1928. But the biggest aspect in this was that the doctors felt that Lala Lajpat Rai died due to the lathis killed by James Scott. And this issue was also raised in the British Parliament. And the British Parliament absolutely refused to have a hand in the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.

But on the other hand the members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association saw all this happening in front of their eyes and took an oath to avenge them.

Bhagat Singh, who was the biggest face of the Indian independence movement, wanted to send a message to the British Government by killing James Scott. But all this did not happen according to the strategy.

Shivram Rajguru, Sukhdev Tha Par, and Chandrashekhar Azad conspired to kill James Scott. But Bhagat Singh shot Assistant Superintendent of Police John P. Saunder instead of James Scott who was the Superintendent of Police due to misunderstanding. John P. Saunder was shot by Bhagat Singh and Rajguru who were coming out of the Lahore Police Head Quarters. When he was running away from the shoot, Head Constable Chanan Singh was injured in the cover fire of Chandrashekhar Azad.
