Soon after the incident Shivaji’s soldiers attacked Bijapur. Finally, on 10 November 1659, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj uprooted the Sultanate of the Sultan of Bijapur.

Struggle with Mughals

At the time when Shivaji Maharaj established the Maratha Empire, most parts of India were under Mughal rule. Seeing the rising supremacy of the Maratha Empire, the then Mughal ruler Aurangzeb ordered his Subedar Shaista Khan to attack Shivaji Maharaj’s empire.

Shahista Khan is said to have invaded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s empire with his entire army and his son and started looting Pune. In response Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj also attacked him and it is said that Shaista Khan lost four of his fingers in this attack. In the year 1670, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj looted heavily in Surat, due to which he got property worth about 132 lakhs. During this he also defeated the Mughal army in Surat.

In the treaty of Purandar with the Mughals, Shivaji had to give many states to the Mughals. But by 1674, Shivaji Maharaj captured all those parts on his own. Shivaji Maharaj was coronated for the second time in 1674 and he got the title of Chhatrapati.
